on the Nissho Peninsula
A 5-day tour centered on "Horse culture and Agriculture." Starting in Obihiro with activities to learn about horse culture and agriculture, including the Ban’ei horse race, the tour then continues with food experiences using agricultural produce grown on the rich land, fishing activities in Hiroo, which is famous for its kelp, and the highlight of the tour on the final day, a climb up Mount Apoi, to fully enjoy the Nissho Peninsula in five days.

After being greeted by a large mammoth replica at the entrance, you can learn all about the transformation of the area into Japan's largest agriculture kingdom from exhibitions on the nature, people and culture of Obihiro and Tokachi, the history of the indigenous people (the Ainu people), the nature and life in Tokachi during the pioneering era, the development and improvement of agricultural machinery, as well as cold damage problems and harvests.

Lunch at Hageten - Obihiro’s specialty "Pork donburi"

Pork Donburi originates from Obihiro and consists of pork dipped in a sauce similar to eel kabayaki served on top of white rice. It was developed as stamina food for farmers and settlers who exchanged the expensive and hard to obtain eel with pork, which was readily available at the time from the thriving pig farming industry. Locals often prepare and eat this specialty at home and it is also widely served in restaurants for visitors to enjoy.

Horse Museum/Obihiro Racecourse

After learning at the Horse Museum about the history of the close relationship between people and horses in the pioneering era, you can enjoy watching a Ban’ei horse race. Ban’ei has its roots in the Banba festival that tests the strength of farming horses, that worked together with the pioneers as work horses in agriculture and other settling activities, and Obihiro is the only place worldwide where this race is held. Experience the strength and tenacity that overcame a history of hardships in the Ban’ei horse race.

The Tokachi Plain is the largest crop-growing region in Japan. Originally, the volcanic ash soil was unsuitable for agriculture, but after demanding work in cultivating new land through improving the soil and cultivating vast areas using both man- and horsepower, the region became what it is now. Today, the region is expected to play a major role in providing food as Japan's breadbasket. Tokachi is known as one of Japan's most important farmland areas, and the view over its vast fields extending all the way to the horizon is truly spectacular. The tour takes you on a walk through actual production sites (farmers' fields), usually off-limits to visitors, while you listen to the field guides’ explanations and learn about food.

The Tokachi area is a major wheat producer, growing a quarter of the country's wheat. Mugioto Bakery, established in 1950 and belonging to the popular local bakery Masuya, uses 100% locally grown Tokachi wheat in all of its bread. Try your hand at baking a pizza with 100% Tokachi wheat and then enjoy tasting your hand-made pizza.

Rokka forest is a garden managed by local confectioner Rokkatei. Take a stroll through 100,000 m² of seasonally blooming wildflowers and view the galleries scattered throughout the grounds.

A horse-loving couple lives on this farm together with retired racehorses and horses that have nowhere else to go. See how farming with horses was done in the pioneering era in Tokachi and learn about the history of the close connection between people and horses.

You will stay in a cottage or glamping facility in the middle of the forest. Dinner is a char-grill barbecue of local produce from the mountains, sea and fields. Kelp drying activity

In Hiroo Town, kelp fishing to harvest natural kelp is still done with a method handed through the generations. Try your hand at kelp drying while being instructed by a professional fisherman.

This inn lets guests immerse themselves in the nature of the changing seasons before the beautiful backdrop of the Hidaka Mountains. Horse stables are located nearby and thoroughbreds graze on the vast meadows, offering a chance to have fun riding and interacting with the horses. Erimo, situated at the southeast tip of Hokkaido, is home to one of the world's largest fishing grounds with many different species of fish. Enjoy tasting the fresh seafood caught in these waters.

Erimo, a town situated at the southeast tip of Hokkaido, in one of Japan areas with the strongest winds, suffered through deforestation in the past, which led to dwindling numbers of fish and decaying seaweed roots, creating a harsh environment for the people whose daily lives and livelihoods depended on fishing. Plants and trees were replanted over many years to increase greenery, regenerate forests and restore the sea to its current resource-rich state. Board a kelp fishing boat with local fishermen and observe the ecosystem with wild harbour seals and seabirds from up close.
*In case the cruise is cancelled, we will visit the Cape Erimo "Wind Pavilion" to learn about the history of the efforts to protect the habitats of fish and other sea creatures. You can also do seal-watching with large telescopes and experience the strong winds of Cape Erimo, lso called the "Land of Extreme Winds."

Learn about the mountain and its valleys, made up of a variety of peridotite rock types that is unparalleled in the world and that have become exposed from the earth’s mantle deep underground, the unique alpine flora that has flourished in these distinctive soil conditions, and the history and culture of the area, which has long served as a trading centre due to its special coastal topography and natural harbours.

Mount Apoi is made up of peridotite, a rock found only very rarely on land above water that appears at the surface when the earth’s mantle underground cools and hardens. Although it is a low mountain with a peak at 810 m above sea level, you can see many alpine plants here.

Relax in an open-air bath overlooking the endless Pacific Ocean horizon and enjoy local seasonal delicacies from the mountains and sea for lunch, such as the "Whelk and Egg Donburi" made with local whelks.

Located at the southern end of the Hidaka Mountains and designated as a Global Geopark, the highlight of the tour will be a climb up Mount Apoi, where visitors can learn about the ocean protection efforts made by the people living along the Pacific coast, and enjoy fresh local delicacies from the mountains and the sea.

This is a tour of the Nissho Peninsula centered on "Horse culture and Agriculture."
Tokachi has come to be called the nation's food hub due to the part of horses in its history of being settled.
Visitors can walk through the fields, see how farmers cultivated the land with horses, and make pizza using crops gathered from the fields. The tour also offers a chance to see Ban'ei racing, which evolved from the "Draft horse festival" in which settler let their horses they had shared their joys and sorrows with during settling compare against each other in a contest of strength.
In Hidaka, visitors can learn about the history of one of Japan's leading thoroughbred horse breeding farms and enjoy interacting with the horses.
